A statement from our agency
Today we use our voice to advocate on issues about which we cannot be silent. The events of last night and this past week have shined a spotlight on the fear and unrelenting injustice faced by black communities and other communities of color across the United States and those here in Southwest Michigan.
Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to ignite and empower the potential of our community’s children. With that purpose, we work to show them they matter, they are loved, and they belong.
We stand in solidarity with black communities and other communities of color in Southwest Michigan. As an organization and as people, we do not tolerate racism, oppression, hatred, violence or injustice in our community or across our country.
We do not have all the answers and we know there is work to do. We cannot be silent. To remain silent is to be complicit. If we are not actively speaking out against racism then we are condoning it. We will not be silent. Standing together and lifting our voices against hate is how we create change.
All members of our Big Brothers Big Sisters community are encouraged to stand with us and create the change we need here in Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Van Buren and Allegan counties. Lift your voice with us through giving back to your community, demonstrating, exercising your right to vote and encouraging others to do the same, taking care of yourself and those in your community, joining local organizations dedicated to dismantling systemic racism, educating yourself by seeking out work by leaders and educators of color, or having difficult conversations.
Our next generation needs us. Stand with us to speak out against what is wrong and commit to making it right. We are #BiggerTogether.
We welcome your insight and thoughts about how we can work together to make a difference in Southwest Michigan. Click here to share your thoughts with our team.
