Lunch With Littles: Frequently Asked Questions
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we believe that every child has incredible potential—and that with a mentor in their corner, that potential can truly thrive. Lunch with Littles is a simple, powerful way for local adult volunteers to ignite that potential right at a child’s school, over lunch.
Lunch with Littles is a school-based mentoring initiative where an adult volunteer (a Big) is matched with a student (a Little) at their school. They meet for 40 minutes during the student’s lunch period, twice a month, for at least one school year. These consistent, one-to-one meetings help build a positive, empowering relationship.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do Bigs and Littles do during lunch?
Each match is unique, but here are a few common activities:
- Chatting and building connection
- Playing board or card games
- Drawing, reading, or doing school-friendly activities
- Celebrating small wins and just enjoying each other’s company
The most important thing is showing up, being consistent, and showing your Little that you care.

How are Bigs and Littles matched?
During the enrollment process, our team takes the time to get to know our Bigs and Littles before matching them. We consider shared interests, personality, and availability to create a meaningful, lasting connection. Our team stays involved to offer ongoing support to both you and your Little for the duration of your match, providing coaching and encouragement every step of the way.
What’s the time commitment?
We ask Bigs to meet with their Little for 40 minutes, twice a month during the school year. That’s it! A small, consistent investment of time that can have a BIG impact.
Do I need special experience or skills?
Nope! All you need is the desire to help a young person thrive. We’ll provide training, resources, and support every step of the way.
What impact does this program have?
Bigs help Littles feel seen, heard, and supported. That sense of connection leads to:
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
- Improved relationships with peers and adults
- Greater engagement in school
- Higher aspirations for the future
Bigs often tell us they gain just as much from the relationship as their Littles do.
Can I choose where I mentor?
We do our best to match you with a school that fits your availability and preferences. Let us know what works for your schedule, and we’ll work with you.
