April: Match of the Month

Congratulations to Big Brother Domonic and Little Brother Jordan, April’s Match of the Month!

Match of the Month is a new feature for 2021. Each month a match will celebrated with this special recognition. This award honors a match’s dedication to each other and commitment to living out the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Michigan – empowering the potential of youth through one-to-one mentoring.

LITTLE BROTHER JORDAN

Jordan is a 5th grader in Kalamazoo Public Schools. For 2 years he has been matched with Big Brother Domonic. When COVID-19 shut our community down, they switched to virtual mentoring and now connect via video chat, phone, text or email.

Jordan is an expert Rock Paper Scissors player, according to both his Mom and Big Brother. Jordan and Domonic say some of their favorite memories are of playing Connect4 and Rock Paper Scissors together, even virtually!

BIG BROTHER DOMONIC

Domonic is a charismatic Big. His attention and support encourages Jordan, who was initially more reserved, to come out of his shell and grow his comfort zone. Domonic was inspired by his own older brother, who was a High School Big while growing up in Schoolcraft. Being a Big is part of their family culture!

Domonic’s own mentors growing up taught him to be accepting of others and to do the right thing, even if no one is watching. These lessons have made a huge difference in his life; they are what he hopes to share with Jordan.

Domonic has been a dependable, consistent support for Jordan, throughout their match.

MATCH GOALS

Looking to the future, the pair set a goal to help support Jordan’s reading through adventure books. Jordan is also excited to continue learning new games with his Big. Together, they love playing both sports and video games!

Thank you, Domonic, for showing up; it’s a BIG deal.

Thank you, Jordan, for owning your potential; it’s no LITTLE task.
