Meet the Team: Tyler Walker

Meet Tyler Walker, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ (BBBS) Outreach & Engagement Specialist. In this role, Tyler reaches out to potential organizations and gets to know the community, encouraging individuals to sign up as volunteer mentors.

A Perfect Fit

Tyler discovered BBBS through a job posting on Indeed while working in Grand Rapids. Seeking a role that aligned better with his skills and interests, Tyler found the position at BBBS to be an ideal match. With a background in education, Tyler was excited about the versatility and potential of the Outreach & Engagement role.

“I love how social the position is; I’m very social and love meeting people and going to events,” Tyler explains. The mix of office work and community engagement provides a balanced work environment for him. This combination keeps his job interesting and allows him to make a significant impact in the community.

Passion for the Mission

For Tyler, working at BBBS is fulfilling because of the organization’s mission of creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

“I always joke that I could never be a car salesman. It’s important to like what the company you work for does; working here is something I can be proud and excited to say I’m a part of,” Tyler smiles.

Life Outside of Work

Outside of work, Tyler enjoys a variety of activities to relax and have fun. He is an avid fan of Dungeons and Dragons and frequently participates in virtual hangouts with friends across the state. Tyler and his wife enjoy watching TV shows together, with “Bob’s Burgers” being a current favorite.

Making an Impact at BBBS

Tyler aims to bring in dedicated mentors to BBBS. He recognizes that there are many perceived barriers to becoming a mentor and hopes that his efforts in connecting with potential volunteers will help show them that those barriers are much smaller than people often think they are.

“Any potential barriers are outweighed by the impact you make,” Tyler shares. “No one ever regrets participating and sharing their time with a kid.”
