STEM Day!

This past Saturday our agency co-hosted our first ever STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Day event! STEM Day, presented in part by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), showcased different hands-on STEM activities.

STEM DAY

Several matches, along with their families, spent the day at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office. Among other things, participants made straw airplanes, binary coded keychains, and bins full of gooey oobleck. STEM Day was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to engage in fun, educational activities together.

Tara Butts, a Mentoring Relationship Specialist with BBBS, was the brains behind the event. She shares that the event has been in the works since 2020. Due to the pandemic, neither SWE nor BBBS were able to host many in-person events in 2020. We were all excited to finally share this event with our community!

MISSION AND VISION ALIGNMENT

SWE’s mission is to empower women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders; expand the image of the engineering and technology professions as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion.

Their mission aligns perfectly with ours at BBBS: all youth achieve their full potential.

SPECIAL SHOUT OUTS

Everyone who attended STEM Day chose a hiking backpack from Merrell as part of our partnership with them. Special thanks to Rockwell, Pfizer, Kellogg, Performance Validation, and Solvay for volunteering to make this event happen! Another thank you to Arby’s, Husted Farm Market, and Smoothie King for ensuring that all participants were well fed during the event.
