Meet the Match: Emma and Kenya

Congratulations to Little Sister Kenya and Big Sister Emma on their new mentoring friendship! They are a Community Match, meaning this mentor/mentee pair spends time together in the community for at least two hours, twice a month.

Making A Splash!

Emma and Kenya met in September. Their shared love for the beach and exploring the world around them makes them an excellent pair!

Emma was motivated to become a Big Sister after watching her biological brother be a Big himself. She saw the impact he made on his Little, and knew that she could do the same. Emma, who works as a Youth Development Coach with Communities In Schools, knows firsthand the importance of mentoring.

Kenya, who recently turned 9, is full of fun-loving energy. She loves dancing, gymnastics, science, and spending time with her siblings. Kenya shared in her enrollment interview that she is looking forward to being matched with someone who wants to go to the park and the beach with her!

During their first match outing, Kenya and Emma spent time at the Kalamazoo Nature Center, enjoying the outdoors together.

Intentional Matching

Potential mentor/mentee matches are all thought through carefully. Each Little/Big pair has something in common, which acts as a foundation for them to build their friendship on. We call this “intentional matching.” This focus and care help ensure match quality and longevity.

In Emma and Kenya’s match, that foundation is their love for being in the water and spending time outside. Paired with their desire to explore new places, they are sure to have a great time together! Learn more about “intentional matching” and how each Little/Big pair is created here.

Goals

Big Brothers Big Sisters asks its matches to define goals they would like to accomplish as part of their match. Each match discusses new goals annually.

Emma and Kenya identified the following goals:

  1. Help Kenya with her math and reading skills
  2. Do science experiments together
  3. Visit the Nature Center and other places in Kalamazoo

Congratulations, Emma and Kenya! We are so happy to support your match, and can’t wait to hear about all of the fun things you do together!
