Meet the Match: Noel & Cortney
Congratulations to Little Sister Noel and Big Sister Cortney on their new mentoring friendship! They are a Community Match, meaning this mentor/mentee pair spends time together in the community for at least two hours, twice a month.
RUNNING & SCIENCE & FUN, OH MY!
Noel and Cortney met in September. Their shared love for running, science, and trying new things makes them an excellent pair!
A marathon runner who is always on the move, Cortney was motivated to become a Big Sister because she enjoys being around youth. She loves hearing the unique and unfiltered perspectives that kids share. Cortney works as an engineer at Stryker.
Noel, an 11-year-old 6th grader, loves science and wants to be a geologist when she grows up. She is a cross-country runner, and recently reached her goal of running 2 miles in under 17 minutes!
Since meeting, Noel and Cortney are having a great time together! This active duo has enjoyed walking around the Kalamazoo Nature Center, going bowling, and so much more.
INTENTIONAL MATCHING
Potential mentor/mentee matches are all thought through carefully. Each Little/Big pair has something in common, which acts as a foundation for them to build their friendship on. We call this “intentional matching.” This focus and care help ensure match quality and longevity.
In Noel and Cortney’s match, that foundation is their love for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and running. GOALS
Big Brothers Big Sisters asks its matches to define goals they would like to accomplish as part of their match. Each match discusses new goals annually.
Noel and Cortney identified the following goals:
- Help Noel with social skills, specifically interacting with adults
- Enjoy new experiences together
- Play sports together, like soccer and volleyball
