Meet the Match: Max & Derrick
Congratulations to Little Brother Max and Big Brother Derrick on their new friendship! Max and Derrick are a Community Match, which means they spend time together in the community for at least two hours, twice per month.
LET’S DO HOMEWORK TOGETHER!
Max and Derrick met in July. They share a love for being active, sports, and trying new things!
Derrick, an accountant, coaches his son’s baseball team and is excited to play catch with Max. He feels that Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great opportunity to mentor a child.
After waiting for over a year to be matched with his Big, Max was thrilled to hear that our team found the perfect Big for him. The incoming 6th grader loves drawing, football, and basketball. During his enrollment interview he shared that there’s nothing he wouldn’t want to do with his Big- he even wants to do homework with him!
INTENTIONAL MATCHING
Potential matches are all thought through carefully. Each Little/Big pair has something in common, which is as a foundation for them to build their friendship on. We call this “intentional matching.” In Max and Derrick’s match, that foundation is a love for sports and video games. This focus and care help ensure match quality and longevity.

GOALS
Big Brothers Big Sisters asks each of its matches to define goals they would like to accomplish as part of their match. Matches discuss new goals on an annual basis. Max and Derrick identified the following goals:
- Help Max with expressing feelings, regulating emotions, and maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Try new sports together, like baseball and boxing
- Help Max with his academic performance and keep education first
Congratulations, Max and Derrick! We are so happy to support your match, and can’t wait to hear about all of the new things you try together!
