Meet the Match: Mykel & Acacia

Every child has potential and could benefit from having an additional role model to help ignite it. When you volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, like Mykel does, you can be that spark. Sign up as a Big today and you can help a child (Little) fully realize the potential they’ve had all along.

Congratulations to Little Sister Acacia and Big Sister Mykel on their new mentoring friendship! They are a Community Match, meaning this mentor/mentee pair spends time together in the community for at least two hours, twice a month.

KITTENS & ICE CREAM

Mykel, who works at Stryker, enjoys baking, being outside, and spending time with her cat, Kitty. She signed up to be a Big because she wanted to be a supportive role model to a local child.

Acacia, the youngest of 4 kids, is 8 years old and loves being outside, eating, and spending time with her pet cats! Acacia thinks the best part about having a Big will be doing new things and having fun together. She is no stranger to the power of mentoring; some of her siblings have Bigs too, and she is thrilled to have a Big Sister of her own!

At their Match Meeting, where they met for the first time, Acacia shared that she is most excited to eat ice cream with Mykel! Mykel laughed and agreed with her. They are off to a great start!

INTENTIONAL MATCHING

Finding a match that’s successful for both mentors and mentees is important. That’s why the BBBS team ensures that Bigs share common interests with Littles, creating a foundation for their friendship. We call this “intentional matching,” and it’s a big part of what makes BBBS’ approach to mentoring special. The foundation for Mykel and Acacia’s friendship is their shared love of cats, having fun, and their interest in STEM.

Congratulations, Acacia and Mykel! We are so happy to support your match, and can’t wait to hear about all of the fun things you do together!
